Feeding your Mediterranean Tortoise

Some people would like to have an exotic pet on their homes. If you are one of them, then you could try having your very own Mediterranean tortoise. Mediterranean tortoises are a specie of the tortoise family and can be great pets for exotic animal lovers.

Mediterranean tortoises are found on the Mediterranean area. They are friendly and hardy. The area they live in is warm and dry, so imitating these kind of environment on your home should suffice as an alternative to its natural habitat.

Feeding Mediterranean tortoise requires a lot from you. Mediterranean tortoise are herbivores and thus, only eat vegetables. As a pet, you need to provide it with vegetables rich in carbohydrates and fiber. It should also be low in protein and high in calcium. The diet should compose of mainly mixed leafy green vegetables and flowers. It may also have clovers, dandelions, lettuce and nasturtium. Including a variety of wild weeds should also be sufficient.

Other than leafy green vegetables, Mediterranean tortoise can also eat some types of vegetables. This includes grated carrots and courgette, cucumber and other plant products such as Sedum leaves, Agave plant and Optunia Cactus pads.

Mediterranean tortoise are also able to eat some fruits but giving them fruits must be controlled. Fruits should not be given as a part of the tortoise’s diet and should only be given as a treat for them. You should always remember to ready fresh water available for the tortoise to drink. Any meat products must not be given to the tortoise, as it might harm them.
