Taking Care of a Hibernating Tortoise in a Cold Weather

When taking care of pets come to mind, would you like to have a tortoise? A tortoise is a unique pet that no one usually gets, but you might like having such a great pet like them.

The tortoise is a specie of turtles. They are amphibians, which means they can live on water or on land. When taking care of a tortoise, you must know the weather to determine how you should take care of the tortoise.

A healthy tortoise can live outdoors all year round. There’s not much of caring to do with it other than feeding. On a cold weather, especially winter, the tortoise will start hibernating. There will be a decrease in appetite and it will also become more passive. If the tortoise has eaten well during the hot weather, they will then have stored fats and will easily be able to survive the cold weather. You should make a den for your tortoise so that it can’t get away from you. Just remember that the den should have dirt on it because tortoises love to dig as they are good burrowers. If your tortoise is unable to hibernate, then you have to get it checked-up by a veterinarian. The inability to hibernate might be caused by health problems such as being underweight or having a certain illness. When this happens, you must take your tortoise indoors.

As for indoor care, you simply have to build a terrarium in your home for your tortoise to walk on. Also, the temperature must be at 27-30Oc. This can be accomplished by simply putting an UV lamp above its terrarium to create the heat. You must also make sure that your tortoise has fresh foods to eat and fresh water to drink. This should help them recover and be able to hibernate.
