Tortoise Care Guide for Beginners

So, you have finally settled on buying and owning a pet tortoise. You now have a pet that’s definitely more exotic than dogs and cats. However, exotic pets need special care and attention. Being a new exotic pet owner, you have to study and learn by heart your pet’s needs and characteristics. Although a pet tortoise does not require much attention unlike cats and dogs, they also have needs that need careful attention. Yes, you do not have to walk, train or housebreak your pet, but its food, health and habitat preferences needs committed tending.

First, know the difference between a turtle and a tortoise.  Understanding their essential differences will become the foundation for taking care of your pet. Turtles live mostly in water and eat both plants and fish. Tortoises on the other hand, mostly live on land and eat plants and small insects. Although a tortoise enjoy water, they cannot swim and may drown in deep water while a turtle’s anatomy is made for swimming. Now that you know the basic difference, you have to identify you pet’s particular species. Tortoise care guides are based on particular species. Different species have various dietary needs, although they generally eat green, pesticide free, plants and vegetables. They have to maintain a well balanced diet, including vitamins and mineral supplements.
Do not let your pet lie around your backyard or inside the living room. They need to have suitable, safe and comfortable enclosures outdoors, depending on their species. It is very important to keep the pen’s fences strong and solidly buried on the ground, especially if you have a burrowing tortoise. Also, you may need to keep a roof over it to make it escape proof. Keep them away from small sharp objects, predators (even dogs), poisonous plants and deep water.  Some species have particular temperature needs, depending on their original habitat. You may need to provide them with a basking spot, since some species came from arid or tropical regions.
Although you do not have to keep an eye on your pet all the time, keep them away from any high steps or climbing obstacles. If they tip over for a long time, they might die. Provide them with a shallow pan of water rather than letting them graze near a shallow pond or pool. Remember that tortoises are not made for swimming and can ultimately drown in deep water.  If you take care of your pet, and keep them healthy, they will prove to be life long companions since their lifespan lasts from 50 to 100 years.
